LIVING WITH IBS
During my darkest days when my eating disorder was at its worst, I got into the self destructive habit of abusing laxatives. The result? After months of becoming dependent on stimulant laxatives, I gave myself Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Quite simply, it’s literally a pain in the ass! Now that I’m in recovery from my eating disorder I am also in recovery and learning to live with IBS. I won’t paint the picture too vividly for you, but in essence my life involves either being constipated or having to run to the bathroom urgently! Luckily, I have a very understanding gastroenterologist who is helping me to manage having IBS, and he joins the entourage of people I have in my recovery journey, including a psychologist and dietitian. Living with IBS isn’t fun, and my point in posting about it is to encourage others out there not to go down the dark path of abusing laxatives. You are worth more than the weight on your scales, and you deserve to cherish and love your body - not put it through the torture of becoming laxative dependent.
